Myspace. Does anyone still use that ancient social networking site for social networking anymore? Most people I have talked to only get on it from time to time to check up on Bands or listen to music and the occasional video. But when was the last time you logged in and used it for social networking?

I know I've probably logged in once in the last 6 months. The one time that I did log in I was alerted that I could now set up my very own Myspace email. I don't know anyone who would want this except for maybe the bands and radio stations using Myspace.

I don't know why Myspace has not become more of a Media social networking site. Every time I log on they still seem to be trying to compete with Facebook and Twitter. If Myspace would just accept their fate and realize that the community is really using it for media sharing puropses they would be fine. The only way for Myspace to be successful is to differentiate itself from Facebook and Twitter and focus on what they have become and what their users are using it for.

Myspace has tried several things. Such as changing it's tag line depending on what part of the site you are on. For instance if you are checking out just music it says "Myspace a place for music" instead of "Myspace a place for friends." Still I think Myspace should just cave and focus on what they are good at. And that is sharing Media. It is perfect for Bands, Radio stations, and things like that.

This is of course all just my opinion but I did ask several people about it and of course I asked Twitter. I believe everyone or almost everyone only used Myspace to check up on Radio stations and find bands or check out band tour dates and one or two who still used it for posting pictures to share with friends and family.

Let me know what you think and leave me a comment. Or leave a voice mail on my Google Voice!

And yes I am going to start blogging regularly again. I just got my new Kodak Zi8!

The Blackberry

I've had my Blackberry for about a month now. I've been trying out different apps trying to gain as much knowledge about them as I possibly can. So far I like my Blackberry Curve. It's a great phone and a great smart phone. The one thing that I don't like about it are the lack of decent applications.

The Google Android phones and the iPhone are known for their wide variety of apps. Unfortunately Blackberry hasn't quite gotten there yet. I've found a few apps that I do like on the Blackberry that I will list at the bottom of this post, but for the most part I'm disappointed. I looked at the apps on my iPod touch and tried to find either the same app or something similar to it on the Blackberry. I found some but for the most part I came up empty handed.

Not to mention it drives me crazy that I don't have enough space to download tons of apps since the apps won't run from the memory card. The battery life is great on the phone and as long as I'm not sitting on Fuze messenger all day (a Instant Messaging app) the battery lasts all day.

I've found some awesome themes to customize the phone which I do like and is something you can't do on the iPhone. At times though I just wish it had a little more.

The Google Android phones have blown me away. With the variety of applications including several that are just straight up banned from the iPhone at the moment. They are great phones. The Android operating system runs smoothly and in the end I could see the Android beating out the iPhone. The iPhone might have been the first but it certainly won't be the last.

Don't get me wrong I still am an Apple fanatic! But the iPhone getting a little competition is good. In the end I hope to see more and better products all around from Cell phone manufacturers. Which is a winning situation for everyone.

As for the Blackberry Applications I use and enjoy here is a list:
Blackberry Messenger (Idk why I just love sending voice notes and pictures with it)
Twitterberry (Only for twitpic)
Mykite (brightkite app)
Fuze Messenger (Log into several different Messenger accounts)
Google Mobile App
Opera Mini
Twit Vid
Xenozu (YouTube App)
Blackberry App World
Crackberry App Store
Google Maps
AP News app
Qik (streaming video)
Shortcovers (e-books)
Blocked Traffic
Bubble Popper
Google Voice

Those are just a few that I have downloaded for my Blackberry that I would suggest to any Blackberry user.

If you know of a good app Shoot me an e-mail, leave me a comment, Twitter me, or leave a message via Google Voice.

I will be using messages left on Google Voice in coming up Blogposts.

Yes, my Macbook is not fixed yet. I still have to back it up and take it to the Apple store. Poor Macbook :(

Google Voice

I haven't checked my e-mail in days... I got home from my first day at work (yes it went great) and there in my inbox was a Google Voice invite link! I was so excited. I think I've been playing with it for the last 2 hours! The features are excellent. As you can see I've added a widget to my website. If you type in your number and then click "Keep Number Private" I won't be able to view your number. The voice mail will come up as unknown.

Not only can you call anyone in the US for free you can also text. And voice mails can be transcribed.

More than one number can be setup for forwarding. So if you have a cell, work, and house phone you can forward calls to your Google phone number to all 3. This allows people to easily get in contact with you and simplifies it to 1 number. And it can keep your personal numbers private.

You can turn Google Voice forwarding on and off by putting your account to unavailable. This will send all calls to voice mail.

Google Voice is a pretty much the awesome sauce. And they are giving away business cards with your Google voice number and any other information for free (This includes the cards, printing and yes SHIPPING!). You get 25 cards and you can pay $10 and get a box of 100. (Yes I ordered a pack of 25)

And Yes, there's an app for that.

And before you ask no I do not have any invites sorry guys.
And yes I had a good first day at work. It was long and my feet hurt but it went well.

Jackson, MS Comic-Con 2009

Yesterday @mogki and I went to the Jackson, MS Comic-Con at Hinds Community College (Rankin Campus). We both had a blast. @princess_mo and @deosil met us up there. The vendors had some excellent stuff! Totally worth a look. Things were fairly priced or not to expensive and the dealers were willing to work with ya. Heroes and Dreams also gave out a free comic to attendees.

Larry Kenney was the guest of honor. Kenney is known as the voice of Lion-O from Thundercats and the voice of popular cartoon cereal characters Count Chocula and Sonny the Cocoa Puffs bird.

Marshall Ramsey had a booth where he was selling the books he illustrated and Dave Ramsey wrote. I bought two and Marshall signed them for me :)

Other booths included cartoonists, artists, comic dealers, groups, and game dealers. Not to mention all the hardcore fans dressed in their best. And of course the Heroes and Dreams Dreamgirls dressed in popular comic hero costumes and they are the ones passing out free comics. Hundreds flocked to the Con and there is still one more day to go!

TODAY is the last day of the comic-con if you are interested in attending they will be open until 6pm. The price to get in the door is $7. The con is located at Hinds Community College in Pearl off of Hwy 80. It's the back building where the auditorium is. You can't miss it.

Of course I took pictures and video! Check out the Video below which has both.

This Thursday July 9th from 5-9:30pm there will be a tweetup at Sneaky Bean in the Fondren area of Jackson, MS. I encourage everyone to attend. Even if you don't have a twitter account come out and join us and see what Twitter is about.

What is a Tweet-up? A Tweet-up is a Twitter Meet-up. People who are on twitter get together to hang out, network, make new friends, and have fun. It's a great way to meet people or be in a safe setting to meet people you may know on Twitter.

The last few tweet-ups were at Buffalo Wild Wings and it was fun but I want to spread the Tweet-up love around. Each month I'd like to have at least one tweet-up some where in the Jackson area. I choose Sneaky Bean this time because of it's central location and the fact it has coffee, beer, and something for everyone. Also they have a large room in the back. BWW was great but it was loud.

What I would like to know is Where ya'll think the next tweet-up should be. I am still working on a Twitter night at the Braves and if you would like to help with that it would be appreciated.

Leave a comment with a suggestion to a place you think would be great for a tweet-up or send me an @ reply on twitter @iellie.

Also be sure to check out all the information on the tweet-up such as who is going, a map and be sure to RSVP!:

See you at the Tweet-up!

Social Networks are changing the way we communicate every day. It seems every time I turn on my Macbook there is a new tool that allows me to communicate with my friends, family, and connections.

Twitter has probably been the easiest and most portable social network yet. Allowing only 140 characters twitter asks you to answer the question: "What are you doing?" People can follow your feed and you can follow other twitterers feed. It's the same concept of friending on Facebook and Myspace.

Twitter is simple without the noise that many other social networks have but still allowing many of the same features. Plus it is portable! You don't have to have a fancy phone or a data plan to use it. The only feature necessary for twitter to work on your phone is SMS (text messaging).

Twitter also allows for an almost instant communication. You can choose whose updates you receive, how you receive them, and when. Of course if you want to keep all your tweets private you can do so under settings.

But the real question is "Why would I use this?" Well, last year when I was in search of an internship I twittered it out. I almost instantly received a reply from Thomas Broadus at MPB who was looking for a New/Social Media intern. It was the perfect fit and a great experience. I might not have found that internship if I hadn't used twitter.

Twitter is also being used right now for those on the job hunt. I for instance twitter out about the kind of jobs I'm looking for and my "followers" have been great about giving me heads up on openings around the city.

Twitter is also a great way to send out a message. During Hurricane Gustav many people were in commute from the coast to Jackson or farther North for safety. Using Twitter MPB was able to keep their followers from around the state up to date with traffic, shelter, health, and weather information.

But thats not even the beginning of what Twitter can do. Twitter allows for communication not just a one way message. Comcast, Dominos Pizza, and several other businesses have seen it as a tool for customer service purposes. If someone tweets about having issues with Comcast or if someone had a quick question Comcast has a Twitter account set up for that. Any questions asked get answered almost immediately.

Twitter has been able to be used in so many different ways it's the most versatile yet simple Social Network yet.

So if you haven't joined Twitter yet maybe it's time to join the conversation.

(I know I've done articles and blog posts like this in the past I just figured I'd do another one. Plus I've been getting lots of questions from friends lately about twitter)

So, you want a job?

Frustrated with the Economy? Jobless? Can't seem to figure any thing out there? Here are some tips!

I've been job hunting for the past month and I may not have a job yet but I've had several interviews. The main reason I haven't been able to get a job yet is because I am competing with people who have had 5 or more years of experience.

Even though I haven't found a job yet I have figured out how a lot of things work. I'm not an expert on this but I just wanted to share a few pointers on some things I have discovered that seem to work. Here are some tips for those of you job hunting:

1. Lots of jobs get posted on Fridays. For some reason I always have my best luck on Fridays. Don't just use Job search engines go to the company website. Think about companies in your area that you are interested in working for.

2. The Online Resume. IF you don't have a LinkedIn profile get one. Have a resume ready. Sometimes companies give you the option of uploading your resume. Others have a specific resume for you to fill out or they have a build your resume option.

3. Make sure you have references. It's rare they check these but make sure you have a few references that aren't family or friends.

4. USE YOUR CONNECTIONS! The best way to get a job right now is through who you know. Talk to your friends, family, twitter friends. Ask them if they know of a job opening. It's a great way to find out what is out there.

Once you found a job you are interested in you have to send the right impression. Here are a few tips on how to do that:

1. An awesome cover letter will get you an interview: Send a cover letter detailing things in your resume and add things that aren't that might be of interest to the position. Personalize it and make sure you state the full name of the company and the job title. Talk yourself up.

2. Have an awesome resume. List skills you might have. Don't go to far back in your work time line. I have gone to several different universities but I only list Mississippi College since that is the school I actually received my degree from.

3. Dress to impress. If you don't have a suit already go buy one. JCPennys has a great selection of reasonably priced suits for men and Belk has a good section for Women.

4. Do a little research. Don't go to an interview without any knowledge of the company. Find out who they are and what they do.

4. When you go to the interview BE YOURSELF but professionalized. Don't be fake they can see right through you. If you do this you won't have a chance. The people who do this know who they are.

5. Follow up! Get on the phone and find out whats going on! If you don't get the job ask why and what you can improve on.

Good luck on the job hunt all! And if you know of a job opening in the Jackson (full time if possible) Let me know! I'm looking in the Public Relations, Journalism, Mass Communication field.

Me Today Vlog! Apple announcemnets made me :) and :(

A Vlog I did today. I've been job hunting all day so at this point I was done! It's been a long process. If you know of any job openings in the Jackson area specifically in the Communication field or PR let me know. :)

And Apple made me happy and sad today. I wish I had more money...

If you haven't heard about LinkedIn you must be hiding under a rock. LinkedIn is the professional social network. Through LinkedIn you can post your resume connect with previous and past employers and employees or even professional contacts you know.

The great thing about LinkedIn is that your profile is your resume. With one click future employers can easily access your resume. What I don't understand is that most companies have yet to add a feature to easily import your LinkedIn profile.

Today, for most jobs they prefer you to apply online with their application. Over and over again I have to fill in the same questions for these applications. If these future employers added a import from LinkedIn it would simplify the process for everyone. The basic info any employer needs to know is all located on your LinkedIn profile.

This is my plea to companies out there. I am currently looking for a job so the process can become tiresome and frustrating. I think by doing this it will cut down on the headache process that is job hunting.

I understand that some times you want to tweek your online resume for the job you are applying for, but allowing the import of a LinkedIn profile could ease the process.

If you don't already have a LinkedIn profile create one at and be sure to check out my profile by clicking the at the top of the page.

Sorry if this came across a little ranty but it is something I have discovered to be a pain.

I was on WLBT

Last night a story ran about Graduating College students entering the job market in a time where there are not many jobs to offer. WLBT came over to Mississippi College last week and interviewed me on what I was doing to put myself out there to find a job and how I felt about the market.

Check it out:

The video player may take a second or two to load. Just be patient if you have trouble viewing the video you can go here:

The Beginning of this year.

I can't believe it's all almost over. It's been a heck of a year between 2 Internships, Hannah Montana, Organizing a New Media Conference while taking Com Law with Dr. Fortenberry, all trying to get closer to Graduation. Now it's my last day of classes. So I just felt it was appropriate to post this video from the beginning of this year when I wore my Hannah Montana wig to class.

Heroes Season 4 Finale

Wilma and I did our little fun after Heroes video last night. It was fun. DO NOT WATCH if you haven't seen the episode yet SPOILERS!

I am in search of a hallowed out garden gnome for Grants house. There is this bothersome pipe thing that NEEDS to be covered and a gnome would do the trick! Where is the Gnome. Why why the heck would someone put a large Mushroom in their yard?

So far I have not succeeded in my quest. I will continue my search!

The Caf

Last week Wilma, Jerry and I went to eat in The Caf. Out of the two years I have gone to school at MC I have only eaten there five times. While we were walking in I noticed their health deaprtment rating. It was a B! Now a B is not so bad but I was kind of surprised since it was MC and well we are paying $6,000 a semester to go here. Then I saw why they had recieved a B rating. This was alarming to me.

If you can't read the picture it says "Toxic items not labeled." I don't know about you but I find that just slightly alarming. I know it's not serious but STILL!

See the Chicken Pot Pie IS GREEN!

Movie Season Begins! Nom Noms Delay.

I call Summer the season of movies because some of the best movies are released during the Summer. Already some great movies are starting to pop up in theaters.

Last weekend I went to see Adventureland. This movie was excellent and a must see. It goes through the summer of a College student named James whose plans to go to Europe for the summer are thwarted when he finds out his parents don't have the money to help send him. James ends up having to get a Summer job at a local amusement park to save up some money so he can go to grad school at Columbia.

The movie focuses on his time at the park and the people that work there. Especially one girl who has caught his eye. It's a great movie and a must see.

I will talk more about it with Grant on the next episode of the Nom Noms Podcast. We are still working on finding a new site to host and getting the second half of episode 3 up. Sorry for the delay.

A few movies are coming out this weekend that I am interested in seeing.

Sunshine Cleaning looks like awesome! Unfortunately it is only playing at one Theater in my area. I am really excited about this movie. I suggest watching the trailer:

Observe and Report looks hilarious. Seth Rogan. Nuff Said.

Dragonball! I want to see this movie. DO NOT JUDGE ME! I <3 DRAGONBALL KTHXBAI!

And I Know this isn't coming out this weekend but I'm super excited about the X-Men Origins!

Social Network Sites Driving You Crazy?

This post is kind of a rant Sorry I just had some things to say. I do talk about the new application Selective Twitter That I have started using to update my facebook status through twitter so I don't flood out my friends front pages.

Social Networking sites like Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, etc. have become apart of our daily lives, at least for most people. I am on most social networking site and some of them I have been a member on since near the beginning. Lately, they are driving me insane!

Recently I have been unable to use Twitter from my phone and after some digging I found out it could be my phone provider and not Twitter. I'm still not entirely sure but I'm working on trying to get it fixed since I can neither Tweet or receive tweets. Other people have also been having this problem form the same provider I use as well as other providers.

Another Twitter issue I have recently come to face is the fact I've hit my Follow limit! If you follow me and I don't follow you back this is probably why. I don't follow every single person that follows me but if your updates are interesting and you don't seem to just be following hundreds of people to spam or what not I normally follow back. Obviously I won't be able to do anything until I can up my follow limit or go through and unfollow some people. :(

Facebook. I know my last post was all about Facebook but since I posted Facebook has decided to Re-design the front page. I personally hate it. I said it on Twitter but I'll say it again; It looks like a twitter feed. Yes, Twitter works but Facebook is not Twitter! I think the front page would work better if it were tabbed with Status updates, then Photos, notes, Videos, etc. Instead of one whole mess of everything looking like everything else and no real way to separate it out.

I see what Facebook was trying to do but in the end it had kind of failed. I've had the problem where someone will send some thing out to several people and my entire front page is filled with their updates! I have also cut out my twitter feed and I am now using an application called Selective Twitter Status. It is easy to use and instead of sending all of your tweets to facebook it will only send those that have #fb in the tweet. It's great and cuts down on the flood effect. I know some people have asked well how is that different from I don't use because I found it works ok for some people but not all. I think for the majority of people Selective Twitter will work better.

Special Thanks to @jamespero on Twitter for cluing me in on the Selective Twitter application.

Facebook I'm Over You!

Why have I been twittering so negatively about Facebook lately? I'm tired of all the cosmetic changes, the way some people are trying to make Facebook more then what it is. Facebook is a SOCIAL Network.

Recently, Facebook announced another cosmetic change to the home page. Of course the new change looks familiarly like the old home page, before the most recent change. I think it's time for Facebook to give it up. Just pick a format and stick with it!

I've been a Facebook user since end of 2004 beginning of 2005. Before there was one big Facebook there were several separate Facebooks divided by Universities. You could only send messages, friend, tag pictures, etc. with those people at your University. When The Facebook came about it allowed University Networks to connect. It was amazing and Facebook seemed complete.

Unfortunately, Facebook did not stop there. They continued to grow and started to allow High Schools and certain companies to join. In 2006 Facebook opened to the public. Anyone could join the social network. At first people thought this was a great idea, but slowly people have been changing their minds.

Facebook has become so large, and is now just another Myspace. Facebook finally surpassed Myspace in number of unique users this past year. I'm tired of all the cosmetic changes. The older audience is complaining about keeping up, but it's not just them, the younger audience is struggling just as bad.

Facebook has peaked in my eyes. I'm ready for the next thing. I think most people are as well. Facebook was once a place for friends and classmates to share pics, vids, and info. It was a place where nothing was taken seriously and if you wanted to marry your BFF for a week no one cared! It was all in good fun. Now everything is so "Facebook Official" and there are books on "Facebook Manners." People joked on how Facebook was a stalker tool, now it's not so funny there are people who are being stalked through Facebook.

idk if there is a need for books on Facebook Manners but I could see a need for Twitter manners. I'll save that for a later post.

The Official Cups in Clinton TOUR!

Last semester I put together a video tour of the Cups in Clinton for my TV workshop class. Cups liked it so much they decided they wanted to put it on their website! Unfortunately, I was unable to let them use the video I had created. The song I used is copyrighted so I had to change the song.

Here is the video with the new music, or what I am calling "The Official Cups in Clinton Tour":

I apologize for not updating the blog at all. Every time I sit down to write anything, including school assignments, I can't seem to put a sentence together. I've had some real trouble putting together any coherent piece of work lately. All my assignments are scatter brained and articles for the paper are awful! I've tried to sit down and write a few blog posts but they all come out wrong. Hopefully, I can get it together. Is this writers block? idk if you would call it that but all I know is writing anything is not really happening. I barely could put this post together!

So, To cut to the chase, I just wanted to apologize, once I get my skills back I'll post again. Until then I guess I'll just see you around... Wish me luck with this because I really need to get my writing skills back for the sake of my assignments!

Late Night Me Today Feb. 6th

I had trouble sleeping so I recorded a Me Today. Enjoy:

I was sick all last week and have been trying to get into the swing of things with school. I think things are settling in now. I've been busy with this and that lately but nothing major. I've had a lot on my mind thinking about May and what I am going to do once I graduate from college. Decisions must be made.

Why was I late for class? Cowboys...

I was on my way to class today and I should have known to turn around at the first sight of the horse poo in the middle of the road. I came up over the hill and there in front of me was a line of horses and covered wagons. I couldn't believe it. I got stuck unable to turn around and when I finally was able to I had to take the long way to class. :( It was something else.

I found out later it was the Dixie National Rodeo Wagon Train. It's a 3 day ride into Jackson for the Dixie National Rodeo which is happening this weekend. I have to say this stuff only seems to happen to me. Luckily I had my camera on me and was able to take pictures to show my professor why I was late.

I could not resist sharing the story with all of you. Enjoy the pictures. LOL!
