Brands vs. Facebook

I'm blogging on my blog to direct you to a different blog! I know, it's obnoxious, my apologies!

Staying in touch with the latest information about social networking sites such as Facebook can be a struggle. Over the past few months, Facebook has released new features that affect businesses and brands. One of these features forces brands to create engaging and viral content for it to be seen by people who have already “liked” the page. This is an effort by Facebook to force brands to use promoted status updates to advertise.

Please, visit The Cirlot Agency's blog to read the rest of my recent blog post on "Brands vs. Facebook."

VEDA Day 14: Social Media Etiquette

What do you do when someone you are friends with through social media has died? Do you stay friends? Unfollow? What is the etiquette?

Don't ask the Internet a question, you'll end up with a shoe on your head.

VEDA Day 12: Closing Ceremony

Comcast keeps blipping in and out. This has been going on for over a week now. We contacted Comcast and they told us they are doing service in our area. My issue is that this has been going on for over a week and we have lost service for long periods of time. It's not good.

Google+ Events

Google+ released Events, a new feature that allows users to invite circles, individuals or the public to an event. The event feature is integrated into your Google Calendar and will let you know your schedule straight from the event invite. The invitation, also features a directions link, that will open Google maps with directions to the event.

Google+ Events, has an option to add a photo. You can either, pick one from one of your photo albums, upload a new photo or select one of the photos by Google. There are static photo and animated photo options, as well.

Yesterday, I was so excited about the new feature, I decided to create an event for Independence Day. I made it a public event and invited my circles. What I didn't know, was that it sent an email invitation to ALL of my contacts instead of a Google notification.

As you would guess, I immediately started getting messages from friends asking if my account had been hacked, what time the party was and why my location was in the middle of the country.

The Google+ team is already working to fix this issue. Apparently, spammers have already started using this feature to flood users emails and feeds. Hopefully, we will see a fix soon. Until then, I think I will just stay away from pretty new buttons on my Google+.

The Spice Girls Are Getting Back Together! And Other News

If you haven't heard the big news yet, the Spice Girls are getting back together! Am I excited? Ummmm... YES!!!!!

In other news, Gmail finally updated the iOS app to allow for preview and pop up notifications. Now, if only they would come out with an iPad app for G+.

We asked, you voted. Thanks to our iFriends, Grant and I will be heading to Washington, D.C. next week! In case you missed it, we asked our friends to vote on where we should go on vacation this year. The options were D.C. and Disney World. The Internet voted, off to the nations capital we go!

Since the Internet choose our vacation, it only seems right to ask, what do you think we should do in D.C.? We are already planning to go to all the Smithsonian's, the Spy Museum, all the monuments in the mall and Phillips. If you think we are missing something on our list, leave us a comment.

Pinterest: The Social Media Network for the Anal Retentive

If you haven't heard of Pinterest you obviously have been living under a rock somewhere. Pinterest is the latest Social Media Network to hit the scene. The majority of its population is made up of women so it's no surprise that many of the "pins" and boards are related to cooking, gardening, weddings and fashion.

When I first started using Pinterest I could not figure out what the fuss was about. All I could think was, "great another social network that I can share pictures on," I was wrong. Pinterest is a great way to share links to websites and your content in a visually pleasing manner. When a user "pins" a photo from the web, it links back to the website the photo came from. Of course you can still "pin" your own personal content as well.

So what makes this different from Facebook besides the UI? The answer is organization. Sure Twitter, Facebook and even Google+ have all introduced ways to list your friends content and see who is posting what, but Pinterest takes this idea to a whole new level. Instead of organizing your friends you have the option to organize your own content into boards.

Users can opt to follow all of your boards or just select boards. You have control on how your content is shared. This is great for those people that are anal retentive when it comes to sorting and filing.

You cannot put Pinterest up against the likes of Facebook, Twitter and Google+. Although similar, I find that Pinterest is in its own unique type of Social Network. There are no options for games, messaging or all the extra features a full service social network gives you. Think of Pinterest as a Reddit meets Twitter meets Flickr.

Go check out Pinterest and tell me what you think in the comments. And follow me iEllieTV on Pinterest!

My Leap of Faith

A year ago I decided to take a leap of faith and do something about my life. I wanted a change. I was ready to move forward with my career. Unfortunately, there weren't many PR positions available with the state of the economy.

I started applying to jobs within the company where I was working and elsewhere. I struggled just to get my application in to most places. It seemed impossible to get my foot in the door anywhere.

I decided to apply to an agency in town. After waiting a week for a response, I decided to take my portfolio to the office and handed it to an employee, a friend recommended I speak with. I could only hope that someone would take a chance and look at it.

I returned home that evening and prayed about it. The next day I received a rejection letter. Feeling slightly defeated I decided to pick up my portfolio.

It was my day off and I considered dressing in jeans and a t-shirt. Luckily, I was smart enough to wear a suit. I walked into the office and was told that the COO, wanted to speak with me. We sat down in one of the conference rooms and he interviewed me. He explained that a position was not available for someone with my skill level. I told him that I understood and any advice he could give me or assistance would be appreciated. He ended up inviting me back the next week to meet with the CEO. A second interview.

I was so nervous about the second interview. After sitting with the COO in that conference room I knew it was where I was meant to be. I felt like I belonged.

Before my second interview I received an email from the CEO asking me to disregard the rejection letter.

The CEO and COO sat down with me the next week. I heard the same story again that a position was not available for someone with my skill level. By the end of the interview they said they would consider some options and get back with me in a week.

A week later I was offered a job. I am so grateful for this position and this Agency.

The one thing I hope you take away from this story is to not give up and don't expect life to just happen. You have to step out and actually DO something. If you don't like what you are doing or where you are in life take a leap of faith. Pray about it, but don't wait around hoping those prayers will be answered. God will be there for you, but YOU have to take the first step.

In Honor of Valentines Day

This is the video that I was watching 2 years ago the day after Valentines Day when Grant proposed. He claimed that the video distracted me enough for him to surprise me. He said he was going to wait until the St. Patricks Day Parade but couldn't wait another month.

The Dixie National Rodeo

I think these folks have been playing a lot of Oregon Trail.
